The third sentence (I'll come back the first) is also apt, "Is be not a superior man indeed, who when people do not recognize him is not put out" I do know that after successive visits Dr Lee and Professor and Mrs Liu have many friends and admirers here. None the less, I felt that this, and other similar statement in the Analects, perfect describe our Benefactors from the Chuan Lyu Foundation, because it is hard to find any people who are more modest and self-effacing in there generosity and more gentle in pressing the concerns that lie behind them. 1t is seventeen years since, in 1989, Darrell Liu came from Maryland to St John's as a Visiting Scholar at the invitation of Professor Perham, now Master, and since, at DarreII's urging, I first met Dr Lee in the foyer of the Marriott Hotel in Berkeley. For fifteen years since then, we have had a sequence of high quality lectures delivered by eminent scholars and public servants, lectures that have told us a great deal about a whole range of Taiwanese experience and conditions. We have also seen Taiwanese Studies here begin to put down root and prosper. just as it has begun to European centers and at SOAS.

Confucius also said, "It is hard to find anyone who after three years of study does not attain a good salary ." I have this tag in my College room, in the calligraphy of Fang Chao-ling, the mother of Anson Chan, the Chief of the Hong Kong Civil Service, a photograph of whom, Lord Patten, you have in your book. It he thought that three years of study was enough, Confucius may not have been much in favor of Graduate programs, and might ,:even have been interested in the Careers Advisor Service. But we must not exaggerate his interest in worldly success. In fact, he prescribed a course of self-scrutiny and moral improvement for life, and it is only when a man reaches seventy, that he relents states, "At seventy I may follow my heart's desire

We. for our part have nut much emphasis on graduate courses. Our Two-year M. Phil. conversion course in Modern Chinese Studies, for young professionals, and our one year M. Phil. in East Asia Studies are both relatively new and are attracting better and better students in buoyant numbers.

Confucius was not all moral strictures. He also loved the big outdoors and music, and what he said about wine might well provide a rule for any College Dean, as well as for us tonight: "Concerning wine, there need be no limit; but it should not reach disorder,"

Confucius may never have heard of Taiwan; if he was told of a substantial island off the coast of the ancient land of Min, now Fujian province, he would probably have conflated it with the Isles of the Blest, Penglai, Fangzhang and Yingzhou, "now bright, now disappearing in the surge, not easy to find", as the Eighth Century poet Li Bai wrote, but generally identified with the Japanese archaepelago and Korea, all of which ace now soundly within the purview of both graduate and undergraduate courses in East Asian Studies as they are taught both here at Oxford.
