Around this time, there was only Chang Liang-tse who, after having returned from his studies at Japan's Kansai University, supervised students in their research of the works of such Taiwanese writers as Chung Li-ho, Yang K'ui, Wu Cho-liu, Chung Chao-cheng, Ch'en Ying-chen, and Huang Ch'un-ming in a course "Exercise on New Creative Writing"offered by the Chinese Department of Ch'eng-kung University. Chang began this new trend within the academic circles of Taiwan, and he himself put forth great efforts by editing such works as The Complete Works of Chung Li-ho in eight volumes (Yüan-hsing, 1976),

The Works of Wu Cho-liu in six volumes (Yüan-hsing, 1977), and Wang Shih-lang in eleven volumes (Teh-hsin-shih, 1977), which went a long way toward raising the research standards on Taiwanese literature for the time to come. Chang Liang-tse's contributions to the field will always be recognized, yet he himself was eventually pressured to leave the country for Japan, where he took a position at Tsukuba University. It is very regrettable that the zest for research into Taiwanese literature is much weaker within the academic circles on Taiwan than it is among the people.

     Across the straits, research by Mainland scholars on Taiwanese literature became an important focus after the famous "Yeh's Nine Point"declaration on the united front issued by Yeh Chien-ying, member of the Standing Committee of the National Peoples Congress, on Sept. 30, 1981. This research has produced various specialized works on the subject such as Feng Tsu-sheng, T'ai-wan hsiao-shuo chu-yao liu-p'ai ch'u-t'an (An Initial Inquiry into the Major Schools of Taiwanese Fiction), Fu-chien jen-min, 1983; Wang Ching-shou, T'ai-wan hsiao-shuo tso-chia lun (On Taiwanese Novelists), Pei-ching Ta-hsüeh, 1984; Huang Ch'ung-t'ien, Chuang Ming-hsüan, et al., T'ai-wan hsin wen-hsüeh kai-kuan (A Survey of the Taiwan New Literature), Vol. 1, Lu-chiang, 1986; Wang Chin-min, T'ai-wan tang-tai wen-hsüeh (Modern Taiwanese Literature), Kuang-hsi jen-min, 1986; Huang Ch'ung-t'ien, T'ai-wan tang-tai hsiao-shuo i-shu ts'ai-kuang (Artistic Highlights of Modern Taiwanese Fiction), Lu-chiang, 1987; Pai Shao-fan, Wu Chih-ch'un, et al., Hsien-tai T'ai-wan wen-hsüeh shih (A History of Modern Taiwanese Literature), Liao-ning Ta-hsüeh, 1987; Pao Heng-hsin, T'ai-wan hsien-tai wen-hsüeh chien-shu (An Outline of Modern Literature on Taiwan), Shang-hai She-hui K'o-hsüeh-yüan, 1988; Ku Chi-t'ang, Ching-t'ing na hsin-ti te hsüan-lü (Quietly Listening to the Melody in the Heart), Kuo-chi Wen-hua, 1989); T'ai-wan hsiao-shuo fa-chan shih (The Development of the Novel on Taiwan) and T'ai-wan hsin shih fa-chan shih (The Development of the New Poetry on Taiwan), Wen-shih-che, 1989;
