The Development of Scientific Medicine and its Impact on Society in Taiwan, 1865 to 1945
6. Professor
Tsung-Yi Lin writes:-
- Many
children of the early Christian families in
Taiwan became doctors, motivated to follow
the model of the missionary doctors – their
devotion and love to the patients as well
as the excellent results of their work.
- They
were trained to be doctors either in the missionary
hospitals, or in the Taipei Medical College
and Government hospitals.
- The
influence of these Taiwanese doctors trained
in scientific medicine on Taiwanese society
was far- reaching both for the growth of the
Christian churches and the modernization of
society and the culture of Taiwan at a crucial
period of its history.
- These
doctors themselves married and had influential
families, providing helping hands in the churches,
leadership in the community in matters relating
to education, culture, charity and human rights.
A large number of artist, musicians and teachers
come from these families and formed and informal
progressive alliance with non-Christian counterparts
toward the end of Japanese period".
