The Development of Scientific Medicine and its Impact on Society in Taiwan, 1865 to 1945
Registered midwives 2961
Registered nurses 820
There was 1 doctor for every 2,000 of the population.
The Japanese organized midwifery training schools
and made sure that there was a sufficient number of
trained midwives to attend to childbirth throughout
the island. It seems that nursing, as a profession,
was not emphasized by the Japanese (though it was by
the mission hospitals). In general, a system of nurse-aids
or nurse-assistants was followed. The above figures
show a significant difference between the numbers of
registered nurses and midwives.
