The Development of Scientific Medicine and its Impact on Society in Taiwan, 1865 to 1945

        6. Professor Tsung-Yi Lin writes:-
    1. Many children of the early Christian families in Taiwan became doctors, motivated to follow the model of the missionary doctors – their devotion and love to the patients as well as the excellent results of their work.
    2. They were trained to be doctors either in the missionary hospitals, or in the Taipei Medical College and Government hospitals.
    3. The influence of these Taiwanese doctors trained in scientific medicine on Taiwanese society was far- reaching both for the growth of the Christian churches and the modernization of society and the culture of Taiwan at a crucial period of its history.
    4. These doctors themselves married and had influential families, providing helping hands in the churches, leadership in the community in matters relating to education, culture, charity and human rights. A large number of artist, musicians and teachers come from these families and formed and informal progressive alliance with non-Christian counterparts toward the end of Japanese period".
