"You look as though you were put under a spell. How many hours did you sleep?" I rubbed my eyes. "Is it late afternoon now?"

"It's just past noon." He laughed. "It's a new day now," the hotel owner said, and started to laugh again.

I had gone to sleep at noon the day before and now it was one-thiry in the afternoon of the next day. Iwas astonished. I had slept for twnety-five hours. After the old man left, I sat facing Mr. Tanaka. He looked very nervous, as though he had urgent news for me.

"I'm very sorry, I must have kept you waiting for a long time."

"That's all right," he said. Then he continued excitedly, "I have something important to tell you. Yesterday another fellow was trapped by that advertisement - - "Hiring Newspaper Boys." After you left, I often thought that we should think of a way to get back at the newspaper boss's tricky methods. But since I couldn't think of anything right away, another fellow was trapped. I was so worried for him. Last night I secretly asked him to come outside, and I warned him. When he heard what I had to say, all he said was, 'Oh. Is that so. He must really be a rotten guy.'"

"He didn't appear to be scared. I told him he should find another job, otherwise he would certainly suffer a great deal. We weren't short of newspaper boys at all. Within a day or so, he would be sent out to solicit subscriptions. And in the end he would lose his security deposit. Every penny would be taken away from him and he would be chased away."

"But he wasn't scared at all. He stuck his hand out to grasp mine, and said, 'Thank you for your advice, but let me ask you something: why didn't you do anything after seeing your friend suffer so much?' That really made me angry so I told him since we hadn't been able to do anything about it, I had wanted to tell him the facts to warn him."

"Thank you. But I can't just leave. If I left, someone else would come, and the whole thing would strat over again.

Is it right to present ten dollars to the boss every time? Is that right'

"No, it is absolutely wrong. But what can you do?"
