"There is a method. There is a way. If only you fellows would help.' I promised to give him my support and he told me his plan."

"'Inorder to get back at the boss, the only way, the best way is for us to be united. If we were united, we would be strong and powerful. If we don't unite, and everyone works on his own, then we'll be like a bowl full of sand. People will take advantage of us. Do you understand me? When we take certain actions against a person, we must be united in our actions. If we do so, no matter how wicked the fellow is, he will be rendered powerless.'"

"This fellow looked as though he had a great deal of experience, and he spoke with authority. I told him about the situation in your hometown, and how you'd been treated by our boss. He said, 'Oh? There are Taiwanese who suffer this much hardship as well? I want to meet your friend Mr.Yang. I'd like to meet him right away.'"

XVI.
Finally, Mr.Tanaka explained the plans of this new fellow - - Ito - - to me. Tanaka's description of him boosted my spirits. I felt like an oil lamp that had run low on fuel, to which someone had suddenly added some oil. I raised my head. - 98 - If there were really a way to get back at that wicked newspaper boss, that man that had beaten us and sucked our blood, I would be very happy. And now Mr. Ito wanted to meet with me. I was so curious I wanted to meet him right away. If he really had a plan to teach us about how to deal with the boss, then he might have ideas about how we could deal with the situation in my hometown as well.

When I was at home, I was led to believe that all Japanese were horrible people. I had hated them all this time. When I first arrived in Tokyo, I had many doubts in my mind. But now, my doubts were dissipating. Of all the peole I'd met (except for the newspaper boss), most of them were good people. The hotel owner was a rather pleasant, nice fellow. Many of the people to whom I'd tried to sell subscriptions had brought subscriptions from me, simply out of sympathy.

As for Mr. Tanaka, he was even better to me than my own brother. No - - when I thought about that policeman brother of mine, I wondered, what is a real brother? When I tried to compare those two, I realized that I woed a great deal to Tanaka. Like the Japanese, there are good and bad Tiawanese. I hurriedly left the hotel with Tanaka, to meet with Mr. Ito.
