9. But perhaps putting it this way is a bit unfair. After the lifting of martial law, there already have been scholars of Chinese literature who have done research based upon the nativist perspective of Taiwan's New Literature Movement. One need not cite every case, but this year Hsu Chun-ya obtained her Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Chinese Literature at the National Teachers University with her dissertation "Jih-chu shih-ch'i T'ai-wan hsiao-shuo yen-chiu" (A Study of Taiwanese Fiction During the Period of the Japanese Occupation). This is the first dissertation on the subject of Taiwan's New Literature Movement. (Previous to this there were several dissertations on classical Taiwanese poetry.)

     10. This passage by Huang Shih-hui has often been quoted, but the Wu-jen pao ( Five Naysayers Review) has yet to be discovered. I hope that it still exists somewhere in the world. I came to know from an interview I conducted that Huang Shih-hui was originally named Huang Chu-shih and was from the Ch'i-shan area of Kao-hsiung. He was educated in an old-style private school and, late in life, made a living carving seals in his hometown.
